The Scouting Sunrise – Celebrating 100 years of the Scout Movement
The international movement
that is Scouting today has over 28 million members. It is the
second largest organisation
in the world (behind the UN), and is the largest youth movement
in the world. This movement
of young people was started by Robert Baden Powell in 1907.
It is estimated that by
2007, over 500 million people will have made the Scout Promise!
On the 1st of
August 2007, over 28 million people in 216 countries and territories across the
world will reaffirm their
Scout Promise at the sunrise, in a symbolic act the likes of which has
never been seen before. We
in Arklow Sea Scouts will be celebrating this huge occasion with a
dusk till dawn hike and
beach bivvy on the night of the 31st of July, and we will reaffirm
our
promise as we watch the sun
rise on the horizon. Here’s hoping we get some decent weather!!
